The VRWC Returns!

OK, folks, none other than the Associated Press says that the VWRC ("Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy") is not only back, but it never went away. Read all about it HERE.

OK, 3 'Publicans in New Hampshire were sent to the slammer.

The Second Amendment in Washington DC

OK, I'm a little late with this, but what the heck, it's still March, right?

The Preamble to The Bill of Rights

Congress of the United States
begun and held at the City of New-York, on
Wednesday the fourth of March, one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.

THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.

RESOLVED by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, two thirds of both Houses concurring, that the following Articles be proposed to the Legislatures of the several States, as amendments to the Constitution of the United States, all, or any of which Articles, when ratified by three fourths of the said Legislatures, to be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of the said Constitution; viz.

ARTICLES in addition to, and Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America, proposed by Congress, and ratified by the Legislatures of the several States, pursuant to the fifth Article of the original Constitution.

There's a little irony here. I wanted to see the exact text of the Second Amendment, in consideration of THIS story.

A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia's long-standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city's argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.

In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment "are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent" on enrollment in a militia.

The story went on to predict that this decision will be referred to the full circuit of 12 judges, then appealed to the Supremes, where it has a good chance of being heard.

Annnnd... here's the complete text of the Second Amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

What's been giving everyone fits is the two phrases "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State," and "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The Constitution does not define "Militia". And, it is clear from the correspondence and speeches of the notables of the time (Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, and others) that this was supposed to be an individual right.

Of course, one side seizes upon "A well regulated Militia", the other side seizes upon "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed".

I tend to come down on the side of "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" - if nothing else, it keeps the politicians wary - as they should be.

A Foul Crime Prevented

OK - go, and read THIS.

Now then, I can tell you exactly why Mr. Anonymous Hero didn't hang around: He did NOT want to spend 'leventy-dozen hours explaining to the cops, the DA, and the Outraged Press just why he prevented a murder by pulling out a pistol and stopping the perp-wannabe from actually committing his foul deed. Mr. A. Hero did his good deed, and then went home.

I'm not kidding about the word "foul" - the crime would have been most infamous, and foul indeed.

More You Can't Make This Stuff Up...

You can go along for weeks, watching the news like a hawk, devouring every word. You see death, destruction, blasted lives, people who foul themselves up. You'll even see stories similar to THIS from time to time.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A NASA astronaut accused of trying to kidnap a romantic rival for a space shuttle pilot's affections was charged with attempted first-degree murder Tuesday as her lawyer sparred with prosecutors to effort her release.

Lisa Marie Nowak was ordered released on $10,000 bail and told to wear an ankle tracking device. That is in addition to the $15,500 bail that was ordered for Nowak earlier in the day for the attemped kidnapping charges.

Now, granted that the Astronauts are screened pretty heavily to be capable, stable people. Still, sooner or later, you're going to get one that runs right off the rails. But this next part would make you sit up and take notice, even if it was Jane Doe from Kokomo:

You Can't Make This Stuff Up...

Y'know, if any mystery or suspense novelist was to put THIS into one of his stories, the critics would have a field day. "Over the top" and "beyond the realm of the fantastic" are two quotes that come to mind. Of course, those two quotes were applied to Tom Clancy when his story about the 747 being crashed into the Capitol was published back in the '90s....

The markers were found by the family of a Lincoln man who died last summer, but it wasn't until Thursday that police matched the first one to a grave.

More on Freedom of Speech for Soldiers

Mr. Arkin has responded (HERE) to some of the criticism left in the comments to his article (HERE).

These men and women are not fighting for money with little regard for the nation. The situation might be much worse than that: Evidently, far too many in uniform believe that they are the one true nation. They hide behind the constitution and the flag and then spew an anti-Democrat, anti-liberal, anti-journalism, anti-dissent, and anti-citizen message that reflects a certain contempt for the American people.

Mr. Arkin might consider that most people who are in the military already are "True Believers". And that they do believe that they are standing between their beloved home and the forces of evil and darkness.

What I've heard ever since my article "The Troops Also Need to Support the American People" was published on Tuesday are a lot of people telling ME to shut up and be grateful for the sacrifices others are making.

Mr. Arkin, you might want to consider this: There are a whole bunch of folks out there who don't agree with you, especially with the notion that an honest opinion that doesn't agree with yours does not automatically make someone "anti-" anything.

Mr. Arkin, you are not the final arbiter of opinion. And just like any other American, our soldiers are entitled to their opinions. For you to say "I'm all for everyone expressing their opinion, even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army. But I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn't for them to disapprove of the American people." is highly inappropriate.

I'd like to remind you that American soldiers are also "American people". And for you to suggest that military commanders dictate to their subordinates what they should approve or disapprove of smacks mightily of "thought police".

A final thought: I don't want you to "shut up". I want you to continue to be what you so obviously are. Go ahead and trot your opinions out there - and be prepared to have some of your readers disagree with you. Even if they are active-service military people. After all, dissent and debate are the American Way.

If that makes me "arrogant" and "intolerant", so be it.

And, by the way... Where were YOU in '72?

Freedom of Speech, Even For Soldiers

OK... it's been a long day, and I'm tired.

That makes me a little cranky, OK? So, cut me a little slack, here.

Mr. William M. Arkin, of the Washington Post, has put together a little screed (HERE) knocking NBC (see the video HERE) for daring to report how those young enlisted types who are actually serving in the Sand Box feel about "Support the troops, 'Diss the mission".

Actually, the illustrious, industrious Mr. Arkin just 'disses the troops, with a kind of a side-swipe at the mission.

I'm all for everyone expressing their opinion, even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army. But I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn't for them to disapprove of the American people.

You mean to tell me that our soldiers aren't allowed to have their own opinions of people like you? And they're not supposed to say anything contrary to your notion of the will of the American People?

"Oh, the Horror of it All! I'm being contradicted by Enlisted Swine!"

And this:

So, we pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society?

"Decent" wage. "Vast social support systems". "Above society".

Sure.

Annnnnnd....here's the capper:

But it is the United States and instead this NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary - oops sorry, volunteer - force that thinks it is doing the dirty work.

"Mercenary".

Mr. Arkin, YOU get paid (probably by the word) for what you do. Does that make you a "Mercenary Writer"?

Well, does it?

These young men and women are not "mercenary soldiers". They are in the organized and Constitutionally mandated armed forces of their own country. They have indeed volunteered. Yes, they get paid. So do you.

There is one big difference between you and them. They stick their physical necks out. You just stick your literary neck out.

And by the way, from 1969 through 1973 I was in the Armed Forces of the US. Judging from your photo, you and I are contemporaries. Where were you, in '72?

Heidi Cullen Advocates Scientific Censorship?

With just a single sentence in an obscure blog entry, Dr. Heidi Cullen of The Weather Channel has managed to get herself slammed by no less a luminary than the dreaded Rush Limbaugh.

Here's the sentence: "If a meteorologist can't speak to the fundamental science of climate change, then maybe the AMS shouldn't give them a Seal of Approval."

When I heard Mr. Limbaugh ranting and raving over Cullen's written comment, I thought that surely he must be mistaken. Rush has been known to miss once or twice.

Well, Rush, you weren't wrong, but you were getting a little over-exercised. Or were you?

It turns out that Dr. Cullen has had as a guest on her show a fella named Dave Roberts who has advocated the following for people who are sceptical of "global warming" theories: "When we've finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are really hitting us and we're in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have war crimes trials for these bastards -- some sort of climate Nuremberg."
